Why the Pope is (this time) right

In spite of having been raised as a Catholic, I do not always agree with the position of the Church or of its highest leader, the Pope.
I disagree on his position on contraception, as an example, and I think that the Church must return back to the people, if it want to survive in the XXI century. In spite of this, I think that today the Pope has really catched the point. With all these tremendous news from Wall Street, with the bank system panicking and loosing so many money, the Pope has reminded us all of what really matters: not the material things.

He said ”He who builds only on visible and tangible things like success, career and money, he builds the house of his life on sand”.”We are now seeing, in the collapse of major banks, that money vanishes, it is nothing’ ”All these things that appear to be real are in fact secondary. Only God’s words are a solid reality”

Whatever is your faith or believe, these are word full of sense. In my opinion the great emptiness in modern man and society is almost completely due to false values we believe in. We have forgotten what is important and what is not and the word of the Pope should be a strong reason to stop a while and to think about on which ground we are building our lives on.

Music of the Spheres: Mike does it again

I have been listening to Mike Oldfield since forever. I could not even remember the very first time I heard something from him. So said, I am not always happy with his works, especially with the latest. I was quite disappointed with works like “Tres Lunas” or “Tubular Bells 3″. He simply seemed to have missed the innovative power of his earliest works. “Light and Shade” was not bad, but still, not really getting to the point. Now with his latest work “Music of the Spheres” Mike seem to have returned to his highest standards. The music of this album is a delightful mixture of classical, orchestral and soundtrack flavors that fascinate me more and more as I listen to it. Yes, I know, if you listen to it carefully you will catch some Tubular Bellish glimpses…again…but the result is so good that I forgive Mike for this. Well done Mike!

Segreti e Bugie

Chi ricorda in bel film di Mike Leigh? Che cosa é più difficile che essere davvero capaci di accettare la verità su se stessi? Ognuno di noi preferisce attaccarsi alla stesse vecchie ritrite bugie, incapace di credere all’immagine che rimanda lo specchio.

La bugia ci da conforto e ci illude di capirci. La verità ci spaventa e ci toglie la terra di sotto.

Le menti di Silicio

Da secoli le religioni e la mistica guidano l’uomo a staccarsi dai limiti fisici del suo corpo e della sua materialità per raggiungere un livello superiore, incorporeo e spirituale.

Ora notate quello che è successo alle creature di silicio. Negli anni 40 i primi elaboratori erano un tripudio di fisicita’. Occupavano stanze intere di circuiti, valvole, rele’ e condensatori. Scaldavano, erano rumorose, erano “materia”. Poi si sono raffinate…ecco arrivare i transistor, poi i microprocessori, ed ecco che il “corpo” delle creature di silicio diviene sempre piu’ snello…ora occupano poco spazio in una stanza…ora si avvicinano a noi. Ora sono sulle nostre scrivanie, scatoloni polverosi e sibilanti. Ecco ora divenire una piccola scatoletta che mi fa compagnia nel letto, adagiato sulle mie gambe, il portatile da cui scrivo. E ancora piu’piccoli dietro l’angolo. Sempre meno fisici, sempre piu’ potenti, l’esatto contrario di noi.

Fra non molto saranno piccolissimi, invisibili, degli insetti, immateriali e sempre piu’ vicini alla scintilla della coscienza.

E’ per questo che ci attraggono cosi’ tanto? Perche’ sono l’umanita’ realizzata? Perche’ arrivano dove noi vorremmo arrivare senza riuscire?

Andreas Vollenweider rimasterizzato

La mia prima scoperta di Andreas Vollenweider risale alla fine degli anni 80. Mai musicista fu per me piu’ evocativo e piu’ capace di aprire una porta su altri mondi.

Nel corso degli anni ho raccolto tutti i suoi lavori, fino al bellissimo Midnight Clear.

Recentemente ho scoperto che Andreas ha remixato e rimasterizzato i suoi album a 24 bit sotto l’etichetta Edel.

Devo dire che il risultato è stupefacente. La qualita’ audio, gia’ ottima per i CD originali subisce un drammatico miglioramento. L’impressione ad un ascolto in cuffia è di avere davvero gli strumenti nella testa.

Consiglio a chi lo ama di acquistare queste riedizioni. Vale veramente la pena. Unico fastidio: l’inserimento di una piccola pausa tra i brani che spezza la continuita’ e non era presente nei lavori originari.
